Eric’s Law goes into affect today!
Celebrating Eric Carpenter-Grantham 🌟🦋
Today, Maryland will implement Eric’s Law, also known as Eric’s ID Law—a life-changing piece of legislation inspired by Eric Carpenter-Grantham, our 2025 Beacon Award honoree.
Eric’s Law gives people with non-apparent disabilities—like autism, PTSD, or intellectual/developmental challenges—the option to add a simple butterfly symbol to their driver’s license or state ID. This gentle marker helps law enforcement and first responders understand that the person they’re helping may have unique needs, ensuring safer and more compassionate interactions.
The butterfly is more than a symbol—it’s a reminder that strength and resilience aren’t always visible at first glance. Just like a butterfly emerging with grace and determination, people living with non-apparent disabilities show courage every day.
Eric, who lives with high-functioning autism, turned his personal experience into advocacy that will touch thousands of lives. His leadership brought a powerful idea into law, proving that one voice can truly make a difference.
At the Ellis Island Honors Society, we are incredibly proud to recognize Eric as a 2025 Beacon Award recipient. His light shines not only in Maryland, but across the nation as an example of what it means to lead with compassion.
Congratulations, Eric—you are a true Beacon of change. 🌟🦋
