Remembering Rep. Charles Rangel
It is with a heavy heart that I reflect on the passing of my dear friend, Congressman Charlie Rangel. Today, I had the honor of attending his funeral at St. Patrick’s Cathedral in New York City — a beautiful yet somber gathering to celebrate a truly remarkable life.
Charlie was more than a public servant; he was a man of immense character, warmth, and conviction. For over 30 years, I had the privilege of working alongside him on the Board of Directors of the Ellis Island Honors Society, where his unwavering commitment to honoring the immigrant spirit and advocating for dignity and opportunity for all never faltered. His friendship meant the world to me, and his absence leaves a void that words can scarcely describe.
The service was a fitting tribute to his life and legacy. I was deeply moved by the heartfelt eulogies delivered by President Bill Clinton and Senator Chuck Schumer — both Ellis Island Medal of Honor recipients themselves — who spoke with great affection and respect for Charlie’s enduring impact on our nation and the countless lives he touched.
As we laid Charlie to rest, I was reminded of the importance of kindness, courage, and speaking up for those who cannot. His example will continue to guide me, and I will always treasure the memories of our friendship and his boundless spirit.
Rest peacefully, my friend. You will be dearly missed but never forgotten.
